Yes, whole grains are better than refined and/or processed grains. But if you really want to take your nutrition up a notch, eliminate grains and use starchy vegetables, beans and legumes for your complex carbohydrates.  Examples of starchy vegetables: cooked peas, carrots, tomatoes; white and sweet potatoes, winter squash, beets, turnips, parsnips, artichokes, jicama.
